Parliament Confirms Haruna Iddrisu, Agbodza, and Eric Opoku as Ministers

Parliament has approved Haruna Iddrisu as the Minister of Education, alongside Governs Kwame Agbodza as the Minister of Roads and Highways and Eric Opoku as the Minister of Food and Agriculture. The approval follows the debate and adoption of the Appointments Committee’s report after the vetting of the three nominees on Monday, January 20, 2025. These ministerial appointments were part of President John Mahama’s second batch of nominees for ministerial positions. The confirmation process took place during a parliamentary session chaired by the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. The House unanimously endorsed the nominations, with MPs from both the majority and minority caucuses supporting the appointments. However, the process was not without brief contention. Prior to the approval, Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin suggested suspending proceedings for 15 minutes due to the insufficient number of MPs present to validate the nominations. He later withdrew his suggestion and urged the House to proceed with the approval process. This resolution allowed the debate to continue, culminating in a unanimous “YES” vote. In his final declaration, the Second Deputy Speaker announced, “It’s obvious the ‘I’s’ have it. The motion is hereby adopted, and this House has approved His Excellency the President’s nomination of Honourable Governs Kwame Agbodza as Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, Honourable Haruna Iddrisu as Minister-designate for Education, and Honourable Eric Opoku as Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture.” Additionally, Parliament also approved Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as the Minister of Finance. Similarly, Dr. Dominic Ayine and John Jinapor received endorsements as Ministers for Justice and Attorney General and Energy, respectively. The swift approvals reflect Parliament’s commitment to ensuring the President’s cabinet is fully operational to address pressing national issues. This round of approvals further solidifies the leadership team tasked with managing critical sectors such as education, infrastructure, and agriculture in the Mahama administration.
