Obuasi clash: 7 Out of 9 Miners Confirmed Buried

Seven of the nine miners who tragically lost their lives after being shot for allegedly invading the concession of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) have been laid to rest. The bodies were released to their families on Tuesday, January 21, following autopsies. The deceased, all Muslims, were buried according to Islamic rites amidst heightened tension in the community. The miners were reportedly shot by military personnel after attempting to access a restricted site for illegal mining activities. One of the four miners injured in the incident remains in critical condition at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, with a bullet said to have pierced a vital part of his body. Efforts to Restore Calm Dr. Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister-designate, along with regional executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been engaging with the youth in Obuasi, the bereaved families, and the management of AGA to de-escalate tensions. “We urge everyone to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their hands. The President has assured a thorough investigation to ensure a meaningful resolution. Security officers are here to protect us, not harm us. We will work to prevent such painful losses in the future,” Dr. Amoakohene said during a meeting with local youth. President Orders Investigation President John Dramani Mahama, on Sunday, January 19, directed an immediate investigation into the shooting. While relative calm has been restored in Obuasi, security presence has been increased, and schools remain closed as a precautionary measure. Ongoing Disputes Over Illegal Mining The incident highlights the long-standing tensions between illegal miners and AngloGold Ashanti over access to mining concessions. For years, these confrontations have caused unrest between the local youth and the mining firm. Stakeholders are currently in discussions to develop a lasting solution to the recurring disturbances and ensure peaceful coexistence between the community and the mining company.
