Otumfuo Deposes Owhinhene for Defiling the Sacred Ashanti Oath

Kumasi, February 24, 2025 – The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially destooled Nana Kusi Baaye II, the Chief of Ohwim in the Ashanti Region, marking the end of his 16-year reign. The decision follows a series of grave offenses, including the desecration of the Great Oath of Ashanti, extortion, illegal land sales, and unauthorized mining activities. The verdict was delivered during a session of the Kumasi Traditional Council, where the Ohwimhene was found guilty of multiple charges. The primary accusation centered on his violation of the Great Oath, a sacred covenant in Ashanti tradition. However, additional allegations of corruption, abuse of power, and disrespect for cultural norms further sealed his fate. Breach of Trust and False Testimony The Ohwimhene was accused of accepting bribes to provide false testimony in a chieftaincy dispute involving Adede. Despite knowing the rightful owners of the stool, he demanded GHC6,000 to testify in their favor. Instead, he accepted money from opposing parties and lied before the Asantehene, a blatant violation of his oath of office and the witness vow tied to the Great Oath. His sister, Akosua Nyame, testified that the chief had mocked the Great Oath after she invoked it three times to halt his illegal activities, including the sale of cemetery lands reserved for royals and chiefs. “He told me, ‘If the Great Oath has legs, let it come and arrest me,’” she recounted. Illegal Land Sales and Mining Dwumakye Baapanin, a royal, accused the chief of fraudulently selling 200 plots of land under the pretense that the Asantehene had granted him ownership. Similarly, a former Biemso Dikro revealed that the Ohwimhene had seized land under the guise of a solar project, only to carry out illegal mining operations that left the area devastated. The former Dikro also detailed how the chief had destooled and tortured him and other traditional leaders, leading to the deaths of six individuals. He further accused the Ohwimhene of neglecting his duties to perform essential stool rites, claiming, “He says he is now a Christian and cannot perform the rites, so the stools have been left hungry.” Disputed Royalty and Stool Eligibility A royal family member contested the Ohwimhene’s legitimacy, alleging that he was not a true royal. She recounted how he had denied her daughter’s rightful claim to a vacant queen’s stool, stating, “The male stool missed its way to their side, and we allowed them to occupy it out of goodwill. Now, he claims…

Asantehene Commends Progress of Heal KATH Project

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed his satisfaction with the remarkable progress made on the Heal Komfo Anokye Project, following an inspection tour of Phase One, which is now 95% complete. The Heal Komfo Anokye Project was officially launched by the Asantehene in November 2023 as a $10 million initiative to restore the deteriorating Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), a 70-year-old facility that serves over 12 regions in Ghana. The project was necessitated by the dilapidated state of the hospital, which had been struggling to meet modern healthcare standards due to years of neglect. On Friday, January 31, 2025, the Asantehene visited the facility to assess the ongoing work. Following his tour, he commended the team for their efforts, expressing satisfaction with the near-completion of the first phase. Phase One focuses on the renovation of two floors of Block A, which have now been fully refurbished and furnished, with the installation of an oxygen bedhead being the only remaining task before the section becomes operational. The Chairman of the Heal Komfo Anokye Project, Samuel Adu-Boakye, disclosed that patients currently housed in a makeshift ward will soon be relocated to the renovated section to pave the way for the commencement of Phase Two. According to Adu-Boakye, the second phase of the project will begin immediately after the relocation of patients from the makeshift ward. He assured that the next phase would progress swiftly, as most of the required materials are already in stock. This ensures that delays in procurement will not hinder the continuation of the renovation process. While acknowledging the overwhelming support from contributors, Adu-Boakye emphasized that more funding is needed to ensure the successful completion of the project. He revealed that nearly $4 million has been raised within six months, which he described as an extraordinary achievement. “We are privileged to say that a lot of people have donated. To be able to raise close to $4 million in just six months is truly commendable,” he stated. However, he stressed that additional funds are still required to complete the project, urging individuals, corporate bodies, and philanthropic organizations to continue supporting the initiative. “All the donations have come a long way to support us; however, there is still more work to be done,” he noted. “For those who were skeptical about how the funds would be used, you can now see the quality of work that has been done so far. We, therefore, appeal to all Ghanaians…
