WAEC Releases All Withheld 2024 WASSCE Results in Compliance with High Court Directive

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released all previously withheld results for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in compliance with a directive from the Accra High Court. The council had initially withheld the results of over 10,500 candidates, citing alleged examination malpractice and irregularities. However, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) challenged this decision, leading to a legal dispute. On 30 January 2025, the High Court in Accra ruled that WAEC must release the withheld results without any prejudicial footnotes, describing the council’s justification for withholding them as ambiguous and inconsistent. WAEC subsequently filed a stay of execution to contest the ruling, but this was dismissed on 20 February 2025 by Justice Ali Baba Abature, the presiding judge. In line with the court’s order, WAEC confirmed that all withheld results were released by 28 February 2025. John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Relations, stated in an interview with Citi News, “As we promised, we kept to our word. By the close of February 28, we had uploaded all the results of the candidates whose results had been withheld. The court had ordered that we release the results of those candidates, and we have done so. There are no outstanding results related to those exams.” Kapi added that while the results were released on a Friday, he anticipated that candidates and stakeholders might begin reaching out to WAEC offices at the start of the following week to address any concerns. He emphasized that the released results accurately reflect the candidates’ performance in the examination. This resolution marks the end of the prolonged dispute, allowing affected students to finally access their results and proceed with their academic or career plans. The decision has been welcomed by students and stakeholders, who had been awaiting clarity and justice in the matter.
