UK Pauses Trade Negotiations with Israel and Denounces ‘Repellent’ Extremism

Foreign Secretary David Lammy denounces the obstruction of aid trucks and condemns Israeli ministers’ calls to ‘purify Gaza.’

UK-Israeli diplomatic relations have deteriorated to their lowest point in decades following Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s suspension of free trade agreement negotiations with Israel. Lammy’s decision came in response to inflammatory remarks from senior Israeli cabinet ministers advocating for the “purification” of Gaza through the forced removal of Palestinians statements he condemned as “repellent,” “monstrous,” and “extremist.”

In addition to freezing trade talks, Lammy announced a broader review of the UK’s strategic bilateral roadmap with Israel, citing growing concerns over Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. He sharply criticized Israel’s continued blockade of humanitarian aid, which has prevented thousands of trucks from reaching civilians in desperate need. “This is an affront to the values of the British people,” Lammy said, “and incompatible with the principles that underpin our relationship with Israel.”

Simultaneously, the European Union took a parallel step, with 17 of its 27 member states supporting a review of the EU-Israel trade agreement following a motion by Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp. The EU remains Israel’s largest trading partner, comprising 32% of its total trade in goods in 2024.

In a powerful address to Parliament, Lammy condemned a planned large-scale Israeli military incursion into Gaza, calling it “morally unjustifiable, wholly disproportionate, and utterly counterproductive.” His speech was met with cries of “genocide” from backbench MPs, reflecting the emotional intensity and political divide in Westminster.

Expressing visible outrage, Lammy accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of engineering a humanitarian catastrophe: “Netanyahu’s government is forcing Gazans into a small corner of the strip, cutting them off from essential aid. This is a dark new phase in the conflict.” He warned that Israel’s global standing was at risk. “They are isolating themselves from friends and allies. They are undermining their own people’s interests and tarnishing the legacy of Israel’s founding values—values I have long believed in.”

Despite Lammy’s strong language, some Labour MPs and Conservative backbenchers voiced frustration over the limited scope of action, arguing that halting trade talks was largely symbolic. They urged the government to impose stricter arms export controls, recognize Palestinian statehood at the upcoming UN conference, and introduce a full trade embargo on Israel. Lammy responded that additional measures were under review in collaboration with international partners.

Former Conservative minister Kit Malthouse questioned the impact of Lammy’s statements, saying: “The Israelis don’t care what’s said in this chamber. Must we beg for the lives of Palestinian children before you act?” Lammy rebutted, asserting that Israel is not immune to diplomatic pressure and that recent sanctions against Israeli settlers were evidence of growing international accountability.

The UK has now imposed sanctions on three more Israeli settlers and four West Bank entities. Among those targeted is Daniella Weiss, a prominent settler activist and leader of the Nachala movement, who was recently profiled in a Louis Theroux documentary. Others sanctioned include individuals and groups allegedly linked to violent attacks on Palestinians, including Zohar Sabah, who was previously sanctioned by the US.

Weiss dismissed the sanctions in a phone interview, labeling them “childish” and irrelevant to the broader settler movement. “This won’t affect me or our cause,” she said, adding that her husband had already planned to avoid travel to the UK.

However, Lammy stopped short of sanctioning two of Israel’s most controversial cabinet ministers—Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Interior Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir—despite international outrage over their rhetoric. Smotrich recently stated: “Just as we levelled Rafah, we will level all of Gaza.” Lammy acknowledged that their conduct is under ongoing review.

Highlighting the humanitarian urgency, Lammy noted that the UN has 9,000 aid trucks ready to enter Gaza. He urged Netanyahu to lift the blockade immediately and facilitate the delivery of critical supplies.

Additional sanctions were imposed on Israeli entities such as Libi Construction and Infrastructure Ltd, Coco’s Farm Outpost, and Neria’s Farm Outpost, citing involvement in human rights violations.

Labour leader Keir Starmer echoed Lammy’s concerns, stating, “Britain cannot allow the people of Gaza to starve.” He criticized Israel’s recent pledge to permit minimal food aid as “utterly inadequate” and called for coordinated international action to end the conflict and prevent further suffering.

As pressure mounts both domestically and internationally, the UK government faces growing calls to match strong rhetoric with decisive action in response to Israel’s conduct in Gaza.

Tragic Injustice: The Execution of Black Teenager George Stinney Jr. and the Fight for His Posthumous Innocence

In the 20th century, the youngest person executed in the United States was George Stinney Jr. At just 14 years old, he was executed in the electric chair. From the day of his trial until his execution, the young man held a Bible in his hands, constantly proclaiming his innocence. Stinney was charged with murdering two white girls. One victim was 11-year-old Betty, and the other was 7-year-old Mary. Their bodies were found near their own homes. During the trial, all the jurors were white, and the proceedings lasted only two hours. Just 10 minutes into the trial, the death sentence was handed down. Stinney’s parents were threatened with death and were not allowed to give their son any comfort in the courtroom. They were subsequently forced to leave their town. George Stinney spent 81 days in prison before his death and was never allowed to see his parents during that time. He was held in solitary confinement about 50 miles from his hometown. His execution was carried out by applying 5,380 volts of electricity. Seventy years after his death, a South Carolina judge has proven George Stinney innocent. The two girls had been killed by a beam weighing more than 40 pounds, which would have been impossible for 14-year-old Stinney to lift, let alone use to inflict lethal blows. The entire case against him was fabricated, and Stinney was targeted simply because he was Black. This tragic story later inspired Stephen King to write his novel “The Green Mile”. It is often said that people in the past were more humane, but that is a blatant lie. People were cruel then, just as they are now. The only difference is that before, cruelty was hidden, whereas now it is exposed for everyone to see.

IMF Reports Setbacks in Ghana Programme Amid Pre-2024 Election Challenges Despite Economic Growth

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has acknowledged Ghana’s stronger-than-anticipated economic growth in 2024, largely driven by robust performance in the mining and construction sectors. However, despite these positive developments, the Fund has raised concerns over fiscal slippages and delays in critical reforms, particularly in the lead-up to Ghana’s 2024 general elections. According to a statement released by the IMF following a mission to Accra, the external sector also showed significant improvement during 2024, supported by solid export performance especially in gold, and to a lesser extent, oil as well as an increase in remittances. These factors contributed to a substantial accumulation of international reserves, surpassing targets set under Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF)-supported program. An IMF staff team, led by Mr. Stéphane Roudet, Mission Chief for Ghana, conducted discussions with Ghanaian authorities from April 2 to April 15, 2025, as part of the fourth review of Ghana’s three-year arrangement under the ECF. This program, initially approved by the IMF Executive Board on May 17, 2023, allocated a total of SDR 2.242 billion (approximately US$3 billion) to support Ghana’s economic stabilization and reform efforts amid ongoing fiscal and debt challenges. At the conclusion of the mission, Mr. Roudet confirmed that IMF staff and the Government of Ghana had reached a staff-level agreement regarding the fourth review of the economic program. This agreement, however, remains subject to approval by the IMF Executive Board. Once approved, Ghana would gain access to an additional SDR 267.5 million (about US$370 million), bringing total disbursements under the program to SDR 1,708 million (approximately US$2.355 billion) since its inception. While commending Ghana for exceeding growth expectations and strengthening its external sector, the IMF expressed concern over a marked deterioration in overall program performance by the end of 2024. Preliminary fiscal data revealed significant slippages, notably due to a large accumulation of unpaid obligations in the months preceding the elections. Inflation also surpassed program targets, and key reforms in fiscal management, the financial sector, and the energy sector experienced delays. In response to these setbacks, Ghana’s new authorities have initiated corrective measures aimed at restoring fiscal discipline and ensuring that the broader objectives of the ECF-supported program remain achievable. Among these measures is a comprehensive audit of outstanding payables to assess the extent of fiscal slippages. Preliminary findings indicate that the primary balance recorded a deficit of approximately 3.25% of GDP, diverging sharply from the targeted surplus of 0.5% of GDP. To address this fiscal gap, the…
