The Ghana Police Service has unveiled detailed security and traffic management plans for the 68th Independence Day celebration, set to take place at the Jubilee House in Accra. In a press release issued on March 6, Assistant Commissioner of Police and Director of Public Affairs, Grace Ansah-Akrofi, announced temporary road closures and diversions to ensure the smooth execution of the event. The affected roads will be closed to vehicular traffic during the celebration and reopened afterward.
Road Closures
The following roads will be temporarily closed:
- Liberation Road at the Opeibea Intersection
- 37 Intersection leading to the Central Business District (CBD)
- Independence Avenue at the Ako-Adjei Bypass
- Jawaharlal Nehru Road at Switchback Road
- Presidential Drive around the Jubilee House, with blockades at John Hammond Road (TV3 Junction) and Kanda Link
Road Diversions
Motorists are advised to use the following alternative routes:
- Vehicles traveling on Liberation Road from the Airport toward Accra will be diverted at the Opeibea Traffic Intersection onto Alliance Française Road, connecting to Obasanjo Highway or the Airport Bypass to link with Giffard Road.
- Motorists on Independence Avenue from Accra will be redirected at the Ako-Adjei Interchange onto Ring Road Central toward Osu or Kawukudi.
- Those coming from Club 10 and Kanda Post Office will be diverted at Kanda Link onto Sunyani and Kade Avenue, connecting to Kanda Highway.
Parking and Vehicle Restrictions
- Unauthorized parking or driving through road blockades will not be permitted.
- Security vehicles and those transporting dignitaries will be granted access after thorough checks.
- Traffic Police Officers will be stationed to guide motorists to designated car parks and diverted routes.
- Towing services will be on standby to remove any abandoned, disabled, or improperly parked vehicles.
The Police Service has urged motorists to plan their journeys in advance and use alternative routes to avoid delays. The public, particularly drivers, is encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure efficient traffic management before, during, and after the Independence Day celebrations.
