Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Claims He Was the Main Target of Disruptions During Parliamentary Ministerial Vetting on January 30.
Appearing before the special parliamentary committee investigating the disturbances that disrupted the ministerial vetting process, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, reiterated his belief that the chaos was orchestrated to derail his screening. The committee hearing took place on Friday, February 7, 2025, where Ablakwa confidently stated that the sequence of events during the vetting process suggested a deliberate attempt to single him out.
According to Ablakwa, the disruptions were not spontaneous incidents but rather a well-coordinated effort aimed at preventing his vetting from proceeding smoothly. He expressed concerns that while other nominees were vetted without significant issues, the disorder erupted precisely when it was his turn, raising suspicions of targeted interference.
“It appears to me that I was the target,” Ablakwa told the committee. “The sequence of events was not random; it was a deliberate scheme to obstruct my vetting… because they were happy to vet others.”
The minister further elaborated on his position, stating that he had observed a pattern in the disruptions, which led him to believe that certain forces within the parliamentary process had intentionally sought to undermine his nomination. While he refrained from directly naming any individuals or groups responsible for the disruptions, he maintained that the chaos served the clear purpose of stalling his approval process.
Ablakwa also emphasized the importance of fairness and transparency in the vetting process, stating that the integrity of Ghana’s democratic institutions must not be compromised by such actions. He called on the committee to conduct a thorough investigation and hold accountable those responsible for the disorder that marred the proceedings.
His testimony has since sparked public debate, with political analysts and citizens questioning whether the disruptions were indeed politically motivated or merely coincidental. The special committee is expected to continue its probe into the matter, with further hearings scheduled to uncover the root cause of the chaos that unfolded during the ministerial vetting session.
