Asantehene Commends Progress of Heal KATH Project

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed his satisfaction with the remarkable progress made on the Heal Komfo Anokye Project, following an inspection tour of Phase One, which is now 95% complete.

The Heal Komfo Anokye Project was officially launched by the Asantehene in November 2023 as a $10 million initiative to restore the deteriorating Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), a 70-year-old facility that serves over 12 regions in Ghana. The project was necessitated by the dilapidated state of the hospital, which had been struggling to meet modern healthcare standards due to years of neglect.

On Friday, January 31, 2025, the Asantehene visited the facility to assess the ongoing work. Following his tour, he commended the team for their efforts, expressing satisfaction with the near-completion of the first phase. Phase One focuses on the renovation of two floors of Block A, which have now been fully refurbished and furnished, with the installation of an oxygen bedhead being the only remaining task before the section becomes operational. The Chairman of the Heal Komfo Anokye Project, Samuel Adu-Boakye, disclosed that patients currently housed in a makeshift ward will soon be relocated to the renovated section to pave the way for the commencement of Phase Two.

According to Adu-Boakye, the second phase of the project will begin immediately after the relocation of patients from the makeshift ward. He assured that the next phase would progress swiftly, as most of the required materials are already in stock. This ensures that delays in procurement will not hinder the continuation of the renovation process.

While acknowledging the overwhelming support from contributors, Adu-Boakye emphasized that more funding is needed to ensure the successful completion of the project. He revealed that nearly $4 million has been raised within six months, which he described as an extraordinary achievement.

“We are privileged to say that a lot of people have donated. To be able to raise close to $4 million in just six months is truly commendable,” he stated. However, he stressed that additional funds are still required to complete the project, urging individuals, corporate bodies, and philanthropic organizations to continue supporting the initiative.

“All the donations have come a long way to support us; however, there is still more work to be done,” he noted. “For those who were skeptical about how the funds would be used, you can now see the quality of work that has been done so far. We, therefore, appeal to all Ghanaians and well-wishers to continue contributing toward this noble cause.”

The Heal Komfo Anokye Project remains a transformational initiative aimed at modernizing KATH and enhancing healthcare delivery in Ghana. With the successful near-completion of Phase One, stakeholders remain optimistic that subsequent phases will progress efficiently with continued public and private support.

The Asantehene’s endorsement of the quality of work done so far serves as an assurance to contributors that their donations are being put to good use, encouraging more individuals and institutions to join the cause in giving KATH the facelift it urgently needs.

“Three Dead After Heavy Rains Hit Adenta on Sunday”

Three people have died after heavy rains triggered severe flooding in parts of Accra on Sunday, May 18, 2025, according to Adentan Municipal Chief Executive Ella Esiman Nongo. The prolonged downpour, which lasted over three hours, submerged neighborhoods including East Legon, Ofankor Barrier, Adentan, and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, causing significant damage. Nongo confirmed that the floods claimed three lives – two victims in Lakeside, including a four-year-old girl in Nanakrom, and a man near New Legon. Many residents were stranded in their homes as water levels rose rapidly. The MCE blamed illegal construction on waterways for worsening the flooding, warning that unauthorized structures would be demolished. “Dredging alone isn’t enough,” Nongo told Citi FM. “Many developers build without proper permits, sometimes dealing with individuals instead of following official channels. Often, our planning officers aren’t even aware of these illegal constructions until it’s too late.” The incident highlights Accra’s recurring flood crisis, which surfaces annually during the rainy season, damaging infrastructure and displacing residents. Despite temporary measures by authorities, fundamental issues like poor urban planning, weak enforcement of building regulations, and inadequate drainage systems remain unresolved. Experts continue to call for comprehensive flood prevention strategies, including stricter development controls and improved drainage infrastructure, to prevent future tragedies.

Trade Ministry and Associations Pledge Price Reductions Within 60 Days,If Cedi Stabilizes

May 14, 2025, The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, in collaboration with key trade associations, has agreed to implement substantial price cuts on finished goods within the next two months provided the Ghana Cedi maintains its current strength against major foreign currencies, particularly the US dollar. The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, involving major industry stakeholders. Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare confirmed the development, noting that several businesses have already begun adjusting prices in response to the Cedi’s appreciation. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mrs. Ofosu-Adjare emphasized the government’s role in facilitating negotiations rather than imposing price controls. “While the government cannot mandate price reductions, we have successfully engaged with traders to secure their commitment to lowering costs,” she stated. The Minister revealed that some importers have already reduced their prices, with broader market adjustments expected soon. “We anticipate these changes to reflect in retail prices as existing stocks are gradually phased out,” she added. Representatives from the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), the Association of Ghana Industries, and the Food and Beverage Association of Ghana attended the meeting. GUTA President Dr. Joseph Obeng affirmed the association’s commitment to the agreed measures and urged additional policies to sustain the Cedi’s stability. This move is expected to ease financial pressures on consumers, with the full effects likely to be felt within the next 60 days.
